Western Pocono Lioness Club awards annual scholarship

Miranda Kramer is the recipient of the $500 Western Pocono Lioness scholarship.

“She is an outstanding candidate,”said Gail Malocheski as she introduced the Pleasant Valley senior at the recent club meeting.

Malocheski is chairwoman of the Western Pocono Lionessscholarship program, which recognizes a graduating high school senior heading to college for the award year.

Lioness Malocheski has served as chair of that committee for many years and has been involved in the selection process for more than 20 years.

The PV senior’s essay connected the Lioness’ focus on service and her personal service over the years, which includes three mission trips.

That first mission trip was a domestic trip, Miranda shared in her essay. “The primary project we worked on was repairing the roof of an elderly woman’s home. It was a long, hot July week, especially when standing on shingles in the sun, but we succeeded in replacing the old shingles and boards. We eased the burden, physically and financially, of fixing the elderly woman’s house for her, something she was extremely grateful for. We brightened the life for this individual, something she hopefully passes on to her own community; giving back to the people in this community uplifted those in need of assistance and created a feeling of unity between us and the people we met.”

In addition to that trip and two more, she has been involved in “soup kitchens and holiday toy drives, teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school, assisting a local program called Equilibrium as a side helper for the special needs guests, and helping at Pleasant Valley Manor as an assistant for the activity times, as well as participating in service activities through my school’s National Honor Society.

Kramer will be attending Bloomsburg University pursuing a degree in nursing.

Specialization will possibly come through experiences in thatprogram.

She is the daughter of Kevin and Stacey Kramer and she has a younger brother who is a junior at Pleasant Valley.

Her scholarship will be held in escrow until after she submits the first semester’s grades to the Western Pocono Lioness Club. That grade mustbe a 3.0 or better, according to the scholarship requirements. Once that is met, the award will then be put in her student account.
