Weather service issues winter storm warning

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Snow is expected to begin late tonight, becoming heavy at  times Wednesday morning. Snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain Wednesday afternoon. The wintry mix may briefly transition  back to snow before ending Wednesday evening.

Total snow  accumulations of 4 to 7 inches and ice accumulations of around  one tenth of an inch are expected.

Plan on very difficult travel conditions,  including during the morning and evening commutes on Wednesday.

Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times  during heavy snow. Snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour  during the morning.

The latest forecast:

Today: A chance of snow showers with scattered flurries before noon, then scattered flurries between noon and 1pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 33. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Tonight: A chance of snow, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 22. Light and variable wind becoming north around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Wednesday: Snow and sleet before 3pm, then freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet between 3pm and 4pm, then rain, possibly mixed with freezing rain after 4pm. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 33. East wind around 7 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Wednesday Night: Freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet before 7pm, then a chance of freezing rain between 7pm and 2am, then a slight chance of snow after 2am. Low around 20. Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 27. Northwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 11.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Saturday: A chance of snow before noon, then a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night: Rain likely before 2am, then freezing rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 30. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Sunday: Rain or freezing rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 42. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
