Schuylkill County Commissioners approve recycling contract

Cougle’s Recycling, of Hamburg, will handle Schuylkill County’s RMP (mixed magazines, junk mail and phone books) and commingled plastics that are generated from the county’s 16 drop-off sites.

The county will pay $60 a ton for RMP and $20 a ton for the plastics, which is unchanged from the previous agreement. The agreement dates are from June 1, 2019, through Nov. 30, 2019. The Schuylkill County Commissioners approved the agreement during a meeting Thursday.

Joseph Scribbick, Schuylkill County Recycling Coordinator, Office of Solid Waste, said earlier this month that the county’s drop-off sites are being used less because of the increase in curbside recycling by local refuse haulers. At one time the county had 28 sites; but over the past 15 years the bins were removed as some municipalities exercised their right to terminate their lease agreements.

In other action, the commissioners:

• Approved advertising for bids for cleaning of the courthouse. Bids are due in the controller’s office by Nov. 18, with a tentative award date of Dec. 18.

• Approved the state fiscal year 2019-20 Hazardous Material Response Fund grant application for $29,216. The grant assists counties in developing an integrated emergency response capability for the health hazards, dangers and risks that hazardous materials pose to the general public.
