Memorial Day observances throughout the region:

Today:

• Coaldale: The Coaldale UVO will hold its services Sunday. First service, 1 p.m. at the Seek Memorial. Second service, 2:30 p.m. at the town hall. In case of rain, there will only be one service at 2 p.m. at the Coaldale Complex Auditorium.

• Jim Thorpe:

Legionnaires will meet at Post 304 and continue to cemeteries for services: 8:30 a.m.: Vietnam Monument (on Broadway across from Immaculate Conception); 8:50 a.m.: Civil War/WW II Monument (on Hazard Square at the Court House); 9:05 a.m.: Korean War Monument (at Diligence Fire Company); 9:20 a.m.: Liberties Monument (on the Liberties Hill); 9:35 a.m.: Route 903 Bridge, memorial wreath placed in river in remembrance of those who died at sea, prayer salute and taps; 10 a.m.: Christman’s Cemetery (on Church Road); 10:30 a.m.: Henning Cemetery (Old Stage Road); 11 a.m.: Hickory Run State Park Cemetery (across from the main office); 11:15 a.m.: St. Paul’s Church (Albrightsville); noon, WWI Monument (JT Memorial Park; 12:15 p.m.: World War II Monument (Fairview Hose Company).

• Polk Township: program at 2 p.m. at Adam’s Faith Garden in Kresgeville.

• Nesquehoning: VFW Post 8008 will visit the outlying cemeteries and memorials. All participants are asked to be arrive at the Nesquehoning VFW no later than 11:30 a.m. They will be leaving the post promptly at noon, starting at the Knauf Memorial on the Broad Mountain. They will then continue to cemeteries at the east end of town, before going to the memorial sites and cemetery in New Columbus. They will proceed and finish at the Hauto memorial by the Hauto Volunteer Fire Company.

Monday

• Eldred: The Eldred Township Veterans Commission is holding a program at 11 a.m. honoring gold star veterans. The national anthem will be sung by Rosie Carillo of East Stroudsburg University, ROTC member. The recent passing of past commission members Elmer Frantz, Helen Mackes and Leon Smale will be recognized. Bring your lawn chairs and share the newly-faced monument.

• Gilbert: The American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert will hold a remembrance ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday. Speakers include state Rep. Jack Rader and state Sen. Mario Scavello. A light lunch with cash bar will follow the ceremony.

7:45 a.m., Legionnaires will meet at the post and continue to cemeteries for services; 8:15 a.m., Immaculate Conception Cemetery; 8:45 a.m., Evergreen Cemetery; 9:10 a.m., St. Joseph’s Cemetery; 10 a.m.

• Lansford: 9 a.m. service at Kennedy Park, American Legion Post 123 holds a service remembering the men and women who served our country.

• Lehighton: Veterans groups will convene in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater at 10:30 a.m. for the main service. After the service, those who are able will form up on North Third Street, and along with area Scout troops, Lehighton Area Middle School Never Forget Club, students, select musicians will proceed to Lehighton Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered. Immediately afterward, the group will form up and proceed to American Legion Post 314 for the flag raising ceremony and conclusion of Memorial Day services/honors.

• Nesquehoning: Parade formation will be in front of the Nesquehoning Recreation Center between 7:45 and 8 a.m. The parade will start at 8:30 a.m. and travel down Catawissa Street to the post home on Center Street. Following the parade, there will be a service in front of the VFW. Refreshments for the participants and spectators will then be open to help honor the day.

• Palmerton: The parade will start at Second and Delaware Avenue, stopping to place a wreath at the Veterans Memorial and then stopping again at the borough hall to place a wreath at that monument. The parade will then continue on to Fifth and Delaware Avenue, turning on Fifth Street to Franklin Avenue and returning to the borough park. Services will begin in the park at the completion of the parade. Featured speaker will be local native Sgt. Maj. of the Army Dan Dailey.

• Slatington: The parade will start at 10 a.m. at Main and Second streets and proceed to Union Cemetery for services starting at 10:30 a.m. The main speaker will be Rear Adm. David W. Kunkel. In case of inclement weather, the services will be held at the Baptist Church, 509 Main St., Slatington, starting at 10:30 a.m.

• Summit Hill: Service in Ludlow Park, hosted by American Legion Post 316, at 10 a.m., followed by the grand marshal ringing the former Summit Hill High School bell to symbolize the kickoff of the event at 11 a.m. at the park.

• St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley will hold Memorial Day Masses at three of the parish cemeteries. Mass will be held at 7:30 a.m. at the Gate of Heaven in New Columbus, at 8:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s new cemetery in the White Bear, and at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael’s old cemetery in Summit Hill. Those who attend the Masses are asked to bring lawn chairs for themselves.

• Tamaqua: The parade will form in the east end of town. The line of march will step off at 10 a.m., with Kaye Leiby as Grand Marshal, and travel west to Odd Fellows Cemetery for the service. U.S. Air Force Col. Curtis Hafer will be the guest speaker for the cemetery service. The annual service will be held at Soldier’s Circle in Odd Fellows Cemetery, beginning at 11 a.m. or the conclusion of the parade if it runs later. The parade will only be canceled in the event of thunder and lightning, while the service will be relocated to the Tamaqua Area School District Auditorium on Penn Street if it rains.

• Weatherly: Memorial Day ceremonies at 8 a.m. at the memorial grounds in front of the Schwab School. A parade from Tweedle Park to Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Union Cemetery will follow at 9 a.m. Services are planned at the church and cemetery.
