MAHANOY CITY – Four Schuylkill League teams took part in nearly 3 1/2 hours of racing around Alumni Stadium on Monday.

Marian, Panther Valley and Minersville competed in dual meet scoring against each other while Mahanoy Area and Minersville also went head-to-head.

Colts garner split

Paced by its relay teams, Marian picked up a 90-42 decision over the Panthers, but came up short in a 77-62 loss to Minersville. Panther Valley, short on numbers, dropped both of its matches, losing to Minersville, 84-55.

On the track, Marian’s Gabriel Bauer was the winner in the 100 meter dash crossing the finish line in a time of 11.50. Teammate Jacob Fenstermaker finished first in the 200 meter dash and Justen Arriaga finished first in the 400 meter dash. The Colts swept the distance races with the 800 meter event going to Gavin Vercusky, the 1600 meter run was won by Daniel Holincheck, and Kevin Earley took the 3200 meters.

The Marian relay teams added two wins. The 400 relay team of Keselicka, Fenstermaker, Joe McGinley and Gabriel Bauer were timed in 48.30. Capturing the 3200 event for the Colts were Vercusky, Kevin Earley, Dan Holincheck and Arriaga at 9:58.70.

The 330 hurdles went to Marian’s Adam Keselicka. Bauer was first for the Colts in the long jump. McGinley was the winner in the triple jump, and Andrew Osilka won the shot put.

Panther Valley had Gabriel DeMatto finishing first in the 110 hurdles, Seth Berk was first in the discus, and Carter Brettle won the javelin. The Panthers 1600 meter relay team of DeMatto, Berk, Bradley Buzzard and Elias Tavares also picked up a win.

Marian girls sweep

The Fillies held off a fast charge by the Lady Miners en route to a 76 ½-63 ½ victory, then bolted past rival Panther Valley 99-40. The Panthers were defeated by the Miners, 89-50.

Holy Cross-bound Marian track star Emma McClafferty captured a pair of wins for the Fillies in the field events, and her teammate Nicole Capparell also was a double winner in the distance runs. Andraya Pikitus had a superb day as well with a pair of wins in the sprint events, and was part of the winning relay teams.

McClafferty topped all in the shot put with a toss of 31-6, and was never threatened in the discus, finishing first with a toss of 113-01.

Marian’s Ariel Stanalonis finished first in the long jump, while Julia Kreisl took first in the high jump, and Anika Hahn won the triple jump.

Marian swept the relays. The team of Jamison Wheeler, Kelly Sullivan, Pikitus and Grace Mussoline hit the tape at 55.40 in the 400; the Fillies raced home in the 1600 in a time of 4:35.30 with Wheeler, Pikitus, Mussoline and Capparell teaming up in the win. Then the Fillies added yet another relay win with Grace Curnow, Abby Digris, Carolyn Mehallo and Kreisl paving the way in the 3200 relay.

Capparell shined in the 800 meter run at 2:39.70, and was first in the 1600 event as well. Pikitus won both the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Marian’s other indvidual win was by Curnow in the 3200.

Panther Valley got individual wins from Aneillia Mcleod, Jacqueline Kokinda, Makayla Weaver and Autumn Steibler. McLeod took the 100 meters, Kokinda captured the javelin, Weaver raced to the tape first in the 100 meter hurdles, and Steibler captured the 300 hurdles.
