Investigating burglaries, police arrest known gang member

Incidents involving burglaries, guns, drugs and gangs were uncovered by state police at the Stroudsburg barracks as a result of ongoing investigations that culminated with the arrest of Howard Wolfe, 38, of Bath, on firearms charges.

Police said they were summoned to an address on Orchard Lane in Smithfield Township, Monroe County, on Jan. 23 to investigate a burglary in which a Smith and Wesson M&P 9 mm firearm with loaded magazines was stolen.

On Feb. 5, the pistol was recovered by the Catasauqua Police Department after officers engaged in a foot pursuit with known Latin-King gang members. An investigation was conducted by troopers Justin Leri, Jonathan Bailey and Israel Giron where a Brian Sommers was identified as a suspect in the burglary, along with other burglaries in the same area. Police said Sommers was ultimately arrested by patrol troopers who had been canvassing the known burglary area.

Police said further investigation showed Sommers sold the firearm to Wolfe in exchange for heroin and cash.

On March 21, Wolfe, a known Blood street gang member, was taken into custody on the firearms charges.
