Prothonotary’s report

A total of 352 cases were started in May in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Joann M. Behrens, according to a monthly statistical report released by the officeholder. A breakdown of cases is as follows:

Civil actions, 35; custody complaints, 17; complaints to modify custody, 16; district justice appeals, 5; divorce complaints, 15; complaints in ejectment, 3; license appeals, 3; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 8; name change petitions, 1; protection from abuse petitions, 36; protection from sexually violent individual petition, 1; quiet title actions, 3; judgments, 162; stipulations/waivers of liens, 12; and writs of executions, 35. The office also processed 89 applications for U.S. passports and assisted the public in the processing of 64 passport renewals.

Behrens’ financial report for May shows $29,623.05 was generated as follows: prothonotary’s fees, $24,613.24; interest income, $4.87; custody/divorce fees, $1,200; PFA Surcharge, Sheriff, $50; PFA Surcharge, Courts, $70; data processing fees, $3,484.94; stenographer fees, $200; and remote access fees, $2,100.

The prothonotary also remitted $4,144.44 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, representing state fees collected locally, and $47.60 to the Administrative Offices of the Pennsylvania Courts, this being surcharges on new custody cases in accordance with Act 119 of 1996. Another $962.33 was deposited in the Prothonotary’s Automation Fund for future use in automating the office.
