Polk fire company to host ‘Cruise in, dine outside’ event

Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company will host a “cruise in, dine outside” event this weekend.

“Come out, get some fair food and look at cars,” said Aaron Keller, president of the fire company.

The event will occur 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

He said Jeeps are coming Friday night, and classic cars and hot rods are coming Saturday. Anyone can participate.

The “cruise in” parking will be the blacktop lot behind the firehouse, and other guests can park in the field next to the firehouse.

The fire company is not charging an admission price for attendees or a fee to drivers who want to show off their cars.

Food, 50/50 raffle tickets, T-shirts and mugs will be sold.

There will be three food trailers.

The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, pierogies, funnel cake, beverages and ice cream.

“This is a way to raise money for the firehouse in these difficult times,” said Keller. “We will also have a donation boot.”

Guests are asked to practice social distancing and other COVID-19 mitigation efforts.

The fire company has responded to 100 emergency calls since Jan. 1. At the end of June 2019, they had only responded to 91 emergencies.

“Our call volume is up,” said Polk fire Chief Billy Tippett. “We have put a spending freeze on, paying only necessary bills to ensure funds last. We have equipment we need to update but have held off those purchases.”

This includes firefighters’ turnout gear and radio equipment.

Their annual membership mailing is out in circulation.

“We are relying on community support more now than ever,” Tippett said.

Polk Township residents may contact the fire company if they have not yet received the mailing. One will be sent immediately.

“We like all departments out there are hurting,” Keller said. “We do not have any clue when we can go back to doing events such as breakfasts, special bingos and hall rentals to the public.”

The events are successful fundraisers each year. It brings the community into the social hall and gives the volunteers visibility.

Most of their annual expenses accrue behind the scenes and when responding to emergency calls.

Keller and Tippett are hopeful that the public will respond by donating to the membership drive.

The firehouse is located at 511 Interchange Road, Kresgeville, PA 1833. For more information: 610-681-4370.
