Art with A View charity event May 18

Carbon County Community Foundation is hosting Art with A View, a charity auction art exhibit and sale from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 18 in the Alpine Ballroom of Blue Mountain Resort.

The event benefits the Carbon County Creative Arts Fund.

Local artists will show their work, with a special tribute to artist Edith Roeder.

Roeder will receive this year’s Art with a View Lifetime Achievement Award.

Roeder is an acclaimed Lehigh Valley artist, whose art consists of oil paintings of local structures often of historic interest, such as stone farmhouses, barns, bridges, homes found in local towns; especially those that may be in danger of being destroyed. She also paints local landscapes and local events such as garden markets in addition to art, craft and auto shows as well as flowers from her garden.

In 1920, Edie was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, but spent most of her growing up years in Lancaster. She graduated from East Stroudsburg University in elementary education also taking classes at Millersville College. She met her husband, Sam while he was teaching chemistry in Lancaster. They moved to Palmerton in the 1950s when he began to work at the New Jersey Zinc Company. They raised four children in Palmerton while Edie was teaching English in Northern Lehigh High School in Slatington. She taught Shakespeare, writing, speech as well as directing the students in dramatic endeavors. She remembers these 27 years very fondly.

Edie retired in 1962 and began taking art classes taught by Mary Kocher with other housewives in Palmerton. She also took workshops from Dana Van Dorn and was influenced by Allentown artist, David Richard.

Her work may be found at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Parkland High School, McCaskey High School, her alma mater in Lancaster, as well as in local banks, libraries, businesses and private homes.

Edie continues to paint and has stated that, “My purpose in painting, is to share my pleasure.”
