Singer Scholarship to return to Pleasant Valley

The Singer Family C&E Foundation Scholarship will return to Pleasant Valley School District next school year.

Assistant Superintendent Rae Lin Howard made the announcement at the school board meeting on Thursday.

“Dr. Avery (a grant trustee) did provide the district with the information to complete the training so the scholarship will be offered next school year,” she said. “The high school administration and the guidance office have been diligently working through these steps, and we are on track and will be ready for next school year.”

The scholarship had been available to PVHS students for about 20 years. The foundation ceased the scholarship in February when it discovered that the person who handled the scholarship for the school district was reassigned to another position.

The scholarship provides financial assistance to each of three Pleasant Valley High School seniors, who each receive $7,500 per year for four years for a total of $30,000 per student.

In other business, Howard said the school district will receive two Excellence in Education awards in May from Colonial Intermediate Unit 20. The awards are for the Learning Recovery Opportunity program and the Ready, Set Learn! program.

The LRO program was created this year to help students who were in jeopardy of not reaching academic proficiency in math and English language arts. It was held after school twice a week for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and was taught by PVSD teachers.

Ready, Set Learn! is the district’s prekindergarten program. It is for children who would be enrolling in kindergarten the following year with PVSD, and consists of five sessions. The sessions provide early literacy activities and activities to do at home.

Howard thanked faculty, administration and staff that made both of these programs successful including Dr. Susan Mowrer Benda, the director of Curriculum and Instruction; PVES Principal Roger Pomposello; and PVES Assistant Principal Sabrina Albright.

“I’d especially like to thank Dr. Mowrer Benda. She really took the lead with the LRO program and brought it to life,” she said.

Howard also applauded the efforts of two PVSD health and physical education teachers Philip Masiello and Kelsey Tompkins. They have been working with Life Skills students to help them get ready for the Special Olympics competition.

“Both of these teachers use their prep time and help our students to train to go for the gold and I say great job to them,” Howard said.
