Homeless man charged with breaking into garage

A homeless man has been charged with breaking into a tattoo shop in Palmerton where he stayed for several days.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed officer Shawn Leadbetter of the Palmerton Borough Police Department in the case against Jason Koons:

At 12:51 p.m. April 23 the Palmerton Area School District and Carbon County Magisterial District Judge William Kissner’s staff notified police that a man was walking around the parking lots of the school district and police department parking lot looking inside several car windows.

Officers Brian White and Leadbetter began to walk down Alley F in the 400 block and saw a garage door ajar along with a broken deadbolt lock on the door. A man with no shirt and gray sweatpants was going through clothing inside the garage.

The man was identified as Koons, 41.

Koons said he was homeless and admitted to walking around the parking lot of the Palmerton Area School District.

He said he was living inside the garage for the past two days.

Leadbetter contacted the property owner of the garage, Tenth Gate Tattoo, located in the 400 block of Delaware Avenue.

The owner of Tenth Gate Tattoo was unaware of Koons living inside the garage and confirmed that he shouldn’t be on the property. He faces charges on two counts of criminal trespass, and one count of burglary.

Koons is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 straight bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing May 8 before District Judge William J. Kissner.
