Where We Live: Mary’s movie reviews

It’s a bird, it’s a plane!

No, it’s just some television you might or might not have watched.

The evenings are dark and long. The weather outside is cold. Compared to all year long we spend more time in front of our television. We here in the Tobia household are always searching for something good and wholesome to watch.

Here in no particular order are some shows on different streaming services that we have watched in the last few months.

“From Scratch.” A young American girl decides to study art in Italy and falls in love with a young Sicilian Chef. It is a beautiful, passionate and heart-wrenching love story.

“Where the Crawdads Sing.” I read the book many years ago and I thought the movie was even better. An abandoned girl fends for herself in the marshlands of North Carolina. Kya has two young men from the nearby town pay interest in her but when one ends up dead, Kya becomes a suspect. As the case develops many secrets are brought to light. It’s a touching and powerful movie.

“Grace and Frankie” is heartfelt and very funny. This came out in 2015 and we just watched it. Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin made me laugh until I cried and cried until I laughed. Both women are friends who have been married to their husbands for over 40 years so when their spouses break the news to the wives that they want a divorce so they can marry each other the fun begins. It has seven seasons, so it was worth getting into.

“1883.” I don’t care how old Sam Elliot is, he can always brighten up my television screen. Of course, co-actors Tim McGraw and Faith Hill make this one of the best we have seen in a while. This is the beginning of the popular show “Yellowstone.” It follows the Dutton family in the year 1883 as they move away from Texas and begin a journey through the Great Plains and end up in the state of Montana. A very well-made western adventure.

“1923” is the follow up to 1883 and Harrison Ford is great as Jacob Dutton as they continue the Dutton family history. I will admit the Catholic portrayals of the young Native American girls is unsettling but are a real part of the story line. We are only on the fourth show but it is starting to heat up for these cold weeks ahead.

“Tulsa King.” OK Sylvester Stallone fans what do you think? I will say he is Rocky he will always be Rocky and I love him in this show. The story is about a mafia mob boss who is released from 25 years in prison and is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to set up a ring in that city. Once there he starts to build his criminal empire. He has both humorous and serious lines which he performs with perfect timing, and he fits the role to a tee.

“I just watched “Outlander” for the third time. So, I guess you can say that is high on my list of favorite shows. “Outlander” is a historical drama series based on the novels written by Diana Gabaoldon. It premiered almost 10 years ago. It is about a young woman from 1945 who finds herself transported back in time to 1743 in Scotland. It has action, romance, comedy and tragedy. There are six seasons and number seven will air this summer.

Now if you want to laugh you have to try “Schitt’s Creek.” It debuted in 2015 and I was so positive that I would not like it, but I was hooked on the first episode. It is about a wealthy family who suddenly find themselves broke. The only thing they still owned was a tiny town called, Schitt’s Creek. So this now penniless family who had it all moves to a very small town with nothing at all and the laughter begins. It is truly one of the best comedies in modern times in my thinking.

Well, Th-th-th-that’s all folks as Porky the Pig would say back in the day and happy channel surfing this winter.
