Polk assesses flooding damage
The biggest topic at Polk Township’s Monday night meeting was the concern on how much damage was done to local roads and the flooding on residents’ properties due to the continued rain.
Keeping up with all the erosion caused by the continued rain has kept township roadmaster Brian Ahner and his crew busy.
“Work with the grader was done on Hell Hollow Road to rework a couple of areas that have washed out previously. There was also rain damage on Radiant Drive. So we went in there and worked the shoulders, but then we had 6 inches of rain, so we touched them up again,” he said.
One of the township’s roads by Syracuse had a gap in the blacktop, and the water actually got in between the layers of blacktop and peeled it up, so the township had someone come in and mill out sections, and the township went back in to fix it, Ahner said.
Also some of the roads are not passable because of flooding, so the fire company put up road closed signs, but it seems people don’t pay too much attention and are driving through signs and getting stuck.
The topic of purchasing a new mower was discussed again. Ahner said he looked into mowers again and reached out, but with COVID-19, the diesel machines are just not available.
“We are going to kick buying a new mower down the road for spring. There is no real option. You can price them and bid them and all that, but what good does it do if they aren’t available?” he said.
He also suggested that before buying a new zero turn mower, he would like to have the mower company leave a mower for a few days so the supervisors can see if it is the best fit for what the township needs.
On a positive note, Ahner said the line painting on Radiant Drive was completed and the crosswalk lines to the intersections are all done.
