Or is it a tool used for drugs that is disguised to look like a pen?

Some items today may have parents fooled, so an interactive display and education program is being held in Summit Hill on Wednesday.

An interactive mock bedroom, naloxone education and distribution and medication take-back box will take place at 7 p.m. at the Summit Hill Hilltop Community Center, 114 W. Ludlow St. The event is sponsored by the crime watch groups of Summit Hill, Coaldale and Nesquehoning and will be presented by the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission and Dr. Daniel Plavin of St. Luke’s Health Network.

“We are hoping that this presentation will provide parents, and anyone that deals with youngsters, with some tools that will be useful in keeping children safe and out of trouble,” said Steve Teeno, chairman of the Coaldale Community Crime Watch.

The event will allow parents and grandparents to explore some of the ways drugs, alcohol and other risky behaviors can be hidden in plain sight. It will also teach about red flags that parents should watch for in their children.

“If there is suspicious behavior, it would be beneficial to be able to check out some typical hiding places to see if concern or even action is warranted regarding drugs, alcohol or even vape materials,” Teeno said. “We are not advocating spying but rather being cautious and concerned.”

In addition, a free training on how to use naloxone nasal spray will be conducted and kits will be distributed.

Because of the nature of the discussion parents, caregivers, educators and adults 21 and older are invited to attend. No children will be permitted at the event.
