2019 primary election: Monroe County primary races decided

The Monroe County primary pushed a number of candidates forward in the political process.

The county commissioner race was narrowed down to four candidates. Incumbent John Christy and Sharon Laverdure were the two Democrats selected. Laverdure led the voting with 3,030, while Christy had 2,516 votes. Laverdure works in the education field. Christy owns Christy Construction Consulting Company.

“I’m extremely happy that I’m on the ballot. I love my job. I love my county,” Christy said.

Andre Reames, 1,604; James Smith, 1,458; Robert Lovenheim, 1,194; and Joshua Walker, 629 were the Democratic candidates who did not make it past the primaries.

Incumbents Charles Garris and John Moyer automatically advance to the November race due to being the only running Republicans on the ballot. Moyer received 4,625 votes. Garris received 4,176. They both have years of political experience.

Moyer said he was disheartened to see such a low turnout for registered voters. Despite this disappointment, he said the Democratic nominees, Laverdure and Christy, are “two excellent choices.” He also mentioned how the primaries never fail to be surprising.

Joseph Rogan was the sole Democratic nominee for county sheriff. He received 4,857 votes. He has experience in the Magisterial District Courts. The Republican nominee for sheriff was Ken Morris with 4,406 votes. He previously served in the Marine Corps. He beat out Efrain Madera of Stroudsburg for the nomination. Madera received 1,587 votes.

Dan Higgins won the nomination for the Judge of the Court of Common Pleas by a landslide. He beat out Gerard Geiger on the Democratic ticket 3,881 to 2,252 and the Republican side 3,859 to 2,209.

The county controller will be between Democrat Luna Mishoe and Republican Marlo Merhige, who received 5,163 token votes. Mishoe received 3,060 votes, moving past Christine Craig, 2,359.

The Register of Wills Recorder of Deeds is set between Democrat Anita Peterson, 5,338 votes, and Republican Josephine Ferro, 5,333. Both ran unopposed in the primary. Beth Rodriguez won the Democratic nomination for Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts with 2,679 votes, beating Stacy Stewart-Keeler, 2,624 votes. She will face off against longtime incumbent Republican George Warden, who was unopposed in the primary.

The constable voting for Chestnuthill Township went to Republican Bradley Mann, with 308 votes. Also running were Republicans Fernando Albano Assis, 34 votes; Christopher Weite, 109; and Vincent Cefarello, 242.
