Schuylkill plans for fall cleanup

It may only be June, but Schuylkill County commissioners are getting ready for the county’s annual fall cleanup.

On Wednesday, they approved this year’s cleanup, from Sept. 10 through Sept. 22. The cleanup accepts tires, appliances and bulky items and is open to all county residents.

The state Department of Environmental Protection reimburses the county up to 50 percent for the cost of this event. Advertisements and the county website will list the exact locations.

Once again, electronics will not be accepted.

The cleanup will take place at 16 sites: Pottsville, Hegins Township, Minersville Borough, CES Landfill, Girardville Borough, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill Haven, Wayne Township, Porter Township, Pine Grove Township, Tamaqua Transfer Station, Ringtown Borough, New Ringgold Borough, Mahanoy City Borough, Branch Township and Tremont Borough.

In related matters, commissioners approved a new recyclable materials supply agreement with Weiner Iron And Metal of Pottsville.

The agreement remains unchanged from the previous one, with the exception of an additional publication, RISI’S Pulp And Paper Week materials pricing.

The agreement runs from May 1 through May 1, 2020.

Weiner will accept the county’s residential mixed paper, corrugated cardboard with less than 5 percent chip board, corrugated/mixed paper, aluminum cans, steel cans, commingled, aluminum and steel cans generated from the county’s drop-off program and will pay the county according to a fee schedule.

The county is also seeking bids for the waste tire collection and recycling.

Bids will be accepted in the controller’s office until 3 p.m. July 30, with bid openings in the commissioners’ board room at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1.

The contracts will be awarded on Aug. 9.
