Schuylkill driver facing DUI charge

Published February 24. 2014 02:16PM

A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence following a one-vehicle crash that may have been caused by the passenger in the vehicle.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Beau V. Schenck, 29, of Pottsville, was driving a 2003 Ford Escape eastbound on Route 209 in Porter Township, at 3:14 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23. While he was driving his passenger, Tina M. Crowe, 27, also of Pottsville, was distracting him by reaching for the steering wheel, troopers said.

This caused the Escape to travel off the road and strike a utility pole. Crowe was injured and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville.

Schenck, who was not injured, showed signs of impairment and failed field sobriety tests. He was then transported to SMC-S, for a blood test. The DUI charge is pending the test results, troopers added.

The Escape sustained significant damages and was towed from the scene.
