Verdicts were reached this week in two criminal trials held in Carbon County court.

Burglary convictionKareem Sanders, 20, of Lehighton, was found guilty of burglary, criminal trespass, and theft and not guilty of robbery and another count of theft, following a two day trial. The burglary count is a felony one, the trespass a felony three, and the theft a misdemeanor one.Sanders was charged in connection with an incident that occurred on Aug. 4, 2011, at 442 Cypress St. Lehighton police charged he and Keith Cheadle, 19, of Upper Darby, Delaware County, and formerly of Lehighton, entered the residence of Robert Rehrig and Tammy Williams and removed a large screen television and cash - reportedly about $1,100.Rehrig was asleep at the time of the incident but woke up as the two suspects were leaving the home.Sanders presented a alibi defense in the case.Cheadle pleaded guilty to burglary and theft charges and was sentenced by Senior Judge Richard W. Webb to serve 12 to 120 months in a state prison.Cheadle testified for the Commonwealth in the case.Sanders presented witnesses who said he was with them when the break-in occurred.The jury panel deliberated for several hours before reaching a decision.Sanders, who is an inmate in the county prison, has other charges still pending in the county. He is facing charges of possession of a firearm without the manufactures' numbers, firearms not to be carried without a license, and unsworn falsification to authorities. Those charges were filed by Lansford police following a vehicle stop.The trial was held before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II, who deferred sentencing. Sanders was returned to the county prison.Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Ann Dyrda Hatton represented the Commonwealth while Attorney Michael P. Gough was defense counsel. Officer Matthew M. Arner was the prosecutor.Retail theftFrederick Andrew Postie, 42, of Tamaqua R.D., was found guilty of retail theft and criminal attempt-retail theft following a one day trial. The retail theft is a felony three.He was charged by Mahoning Township police with entering the Wal-Mart store and removing 13 Iphones that had a total value of $8,254.The incident occurred on July 22, 2012, about 2 a.m. Township police said it was a "smash-and-grab" theft.Postie is currently in the county prison. He is facing another criminal case in which he is charged with burglary, criminal conspiracy-burglary, theft, and related counts. There are two co-defendants in the case.He also has a case pending in Schuylkill County. In 2011 he was sentenced in that county on other criminal charges to a state prison term.Assistant District Attorney Michael Greek represented the Commonwealth and defense counsel was Attorney Joseph V. Seblin Jr. Officer Joseph A. David was the prosecutor.Judge Steven R. Serfass, who presided, deferred sentencing in the case. Postie was returned to the county prison.
