If the Jacob Arner Memorial Airport in Mahoning Township is going to continue to be an asset for Carbon County with regard to its economic development efforts, capital expenditures will have to be made in the near future in order to clear the way for expansion of the existing runway there. Terry Eckert of Palmerton, a member of the Carbon County Airport Authority, told the county commissioners that the project would cost between $17,000 and $20,000. Otherwise, he said, the runway would be shortened, a move he called "a step backwards."
