The hilltop community of Summit Hill was founded 1791 by a hunter named Philip Ginder when he discovered Anthracite coal on Sharp Mountain, now called Summit Hill. The borough, located in Carbon County, is also known for the birthplace of the Switchback gravity railroad, which was the first gravity railroad in the United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau's website, Summit Hill sits 1,600 feet above sea level and has a total area of 9.4 square miles; of which, 8.9 square miles of it is land and 0.5 square miles is water.

The website adds the population in 2010 was 3,034 (1,501 males and 1,533 females); an increase of 60 since the 2000 Census.

As of 2000, there were 1,291 households and 844 families residing in the borough. Of that 25.3 percent of the households had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6 percent were non-families. 31.4 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 18.5 percent had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.3 and the average family size was 2.86.

The population was spread out with 20.1 percent under the age of 18, 6.9 percent were 18 to 24, 27.6 percent were 25 to 44, 23.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 22.1 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years.

In 2000, the median income for a household in the borough was $37,287, and $44,500 for a family. Males had a median income of $36,627 versus $23,507 for females.

About 4.0 percent of families and 7.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.4 percent of those under age 18 and 6.2 percent of those age 65 or over.

Summit Hill is part of the Panther Valley School District, along with the neighboring towns of Lansford, Nesquehoning and Coaldale.
