Jennifer Braddock wins the junior division of Russell C. Hughes Monroe County Spelling Championship

Jennifer Braddock, a Pleasant Valley Middle School student was recognized at the Pleasant Valley School District school board meeting as the junior division winner of the Russell C. Hughes Monroe County Spelling Championships at East Stroudsburg High School-South.

The annual Monroe County competition was started 35 years ago. She competed with other students from grades 5-8 and won a cash prize of $300. Braddock has competed in PVMS's spelling bee since fifth grade, and this was her second time competing on the county level. The last time was two years ago when she was in sixth grade.PVSD board President Susan Kresge presented Braddock with a certificate from PA state representative Rosemary M. Brown.Mr. Heath, PVI assistant principal introduced PVI math teacher Kelli George, who gave recognition to PVI students who took first place at the recent North East Council of Teacher of Mathematics competition.They were seventh grade student Mary Cerbone and sixth grade student Jonathan Rodriquez.Second place winners from PV were Ben Bard, grade 6, Kimberly McKee, grade 8, and Edward Harbison, grade 8.Board President Kresge presented three school board members with certificates of recognition to John Sabia for 16 years of service, MiChelle Palmer for 16 years and Russ Gould for eight years.Dr. Douglas Arnold, PVSD superintendent, said members of the school board give a lot of hours to the district and the community and often get a lot of grief.He thanked the three members for their years of service and said they were three fine individuals.H. Charles Hoffman was re-elected as board treasurer.PVI's Bingo night netted 100 garments for PVEN and the school raised $1,300 in its Sneakerthon for Juvenile Diabetes.PVMS Student Council raised $1,841.61 for Juvenile Diabetes in its Sneakerthon. Mr. Drake, PVMS principal said that amount brings the total the school has raised over the years to over $24,000.The board voted to hire the following:*Security-Scott Campbell and Lynn Courtright for the position of Assistant Chief of School Police/Security at an annual salary of $44,500, plus a stipend of $5,000, prorated, upon proper certification/approval to carry a weapon on their person as per board policy, effective May 27, 2011.
