Published August 08. 2011 05:02PM

A Hazleton man was picked up Thursday by Tamaqua police executing an outstanding felony warrant issued in connection with a May 21 stabbing incident.

Officers discovered Jose Toro Velez, 27, of 765 Carson St., at a Center Street address and took him into custody without incident.

Velez was wanted on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment stemming from a fight in front of the Tamaqua Diner back in May.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Velez became involved in an altercation with a Josh DeWire at 12:10 a.m. on May 21. During the confrontation Velez allegedly pulled a knife, slashed DeWire's chest, dropped the knife in the street, then fled the scene. Witnesses also told officers that Velez' girlfriend, Angelina Patton of 607 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, picked up the knife and also left the scene.

Patton later contacted officers and admitted to picking something up from the street that morning but claimed it was a cell phone.

Velez was incarcerated in the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville, following his arraignment before District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua. Bail was set at $25,000 straight cash.
