The New Jersey Zinc Company plant in Palmerton, one of the largest zinc processing plants in the world, began shutting down following repeated failures to obtain enough natural gas to continue operations. A spokesman for the Zinc Company said, "The shutdown will take about three days, and it is in process right now." R. W. Hogeland, company president, said the firm is still trying to obtain an alternate source of supply in order to resume operations.
