Passengers escape turnpike inferno

There were some tense moments on the Northeast Extension of the turnpike late Friday night when it was first believed that the occupants of this burning car had not escaped the raging inferno. The fire was discovered about 9:30 p.m. at the 64-mile marker northbound, where the car sat along the right berm in flames and no persons were in the immediate area. Passing motorists who had stopped feared the worst after not finding anyone near the vehicle. Firefighters from Schnecksville battled the flames closing down one of the two northbound lanes. A short time later several individuals appeared at the scene who apparently ran to escape the flames. They all appeared to be without injury. State police at Pocono are investigating the incident.
