W. Penn reviews 2020 spending plan

West Penn Township officials have begun to cipher through the numbers in an attempt to craft next year’s spending plan.

The township’s board of supervisors held their initial meeting on the 2020 budget Monday morning and met with the department heads from the police and road departments.

Township police Chief Brian Johnson said his department would like to add two new pickups in the amount of $85,000, and have received both five and four-year quotes.

Other projected costs include about $20,000 for a secretary position; potential pay raises for officers; and the possibility of adding extra patrol.

As of now, the department’s budget is on track to increase somewhere between $20,000 to $30,000.

Township roadmaster Clint Schock told supervisors his department could use a smaller plow truck that would cost around $85,000.

In addition, supervisors discussed putting about $25,000 aside for Water Wheel Road.

The vehicle requests for both departments are expected to be listed on the board’s Oct. 7 meeting agenda for action.

Supervisors will hold their next budget meeting following their monthly morning meeting on Oct. 21.

In December, supervisors adopted this year’s $2,561,361 spending plan with no tax increase.

That left the millage rate at 4.75 mills.
