St. Luke’s doubles size of Monroe hospital

The St. Luke’s Monroe Campus officially opened its doors Thursday to a brand-new, four-story hospital campus expansion.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony highlighted a $90 million addition that, according to St. Luke’s officials, doubles the size of the existing hospital, bringing advanced services and specialized care to the local community.

“The completion of this expansion represents yet another step in the promise we made to provide better health care services close to home for the residents of Monroe County,” Don Seiple, St. Luke’s Monroe Campus president, said.

The new expansion, connected to the east side of the existing hospital, boasts a 36-bed medical-surgical unit, increasing the total number of inpatient beds to 134. Additionally, it features expanded operating and procedural space, outpatient services, a state-of-the-art interventional radiology suite, a HomeStar pharmacy, and a cardiac rehabilitation suite.

“This expansion is here to accommodate the growing needs of our community,” Seiple said. “Our goal is to serve the people of our communities where they live and bring as much care to those communities as possible. This will allow us to keep more patients here. We are proud to be the hometown network.”

St. Luke’s Monroe Campus, located just off Route 611 in Stroudsburg, has been serving the community since 2016. The original facility features private patient rooms, a critical care unit, a large and efficient emergency room, a helipad, state-of-the-art operating rooms, a cardiac catheterization lab, and cutting-edge diagnostic technology.

The facility has also reserved shelled space for future services, ensuring adaptability to meet the evolving needs of the community.

“I remember when we first opened here in 2016 and we always had an affinity with and for the Pocono region,” Richard Anderson, St. Luke’s Health Network president and chief executive officer, said. “We looked at our market share at that time and it showed 3 or maybe 4%. Today our market share is about 52% and I think we’ll probably go above 60% and we’ll probably have to build another wing.”

The construction of the addition employed around 250 workers and was built with American-made steel, aligning with St. Luke’s tradition. The hospital plans to add 50 to 60 full-time employees to support the new space.

“This campus is taking off like crazy, and I feel like we’re just getting started in Monroe County ... We value the patient experience here, and this expansion is another piece of that,” Peter Favini, chief of emergency medicine at St. Luke’s Monroe Campus, said.

Anderson said while the expansion and the St. Luke’s facilities continue to impress, it’s the people inside that will make the difference.

“Our employees are the most important part of what we do,” he said. “If they don’t buy into what we do, it doesn’t work. It is one big family. At the end of the day, they understand it’s about taking care of our communities and families.”
