Stroudsburg dominates Pleasant Valley

STROUDSBURG – The maiden season for Pleasant Valley head coach Matt Kosciolek came to an end Friday night at Ross-Stulgaitis Stadium.

Stroudsburg rolled to a 47-6 win in the regular season finale as the Bears finished 1-9 in Kosciolek’s first campaign at the helm.

Pleasant Valley looked good early on when Nicholas Mazzella recovered a fumble while Stroudsburg was driving down the field. The Bears weren’t able to capitalize on the turnover, and the Mountaineers took complete control of the game late in the first quarter.

“It’s kind of the story of our season where we have a couple of mistakes,” Kosciolek said. “One mistake and it ends up into compounding mistakes. Little things like that, we had to punt the ball and it ends up in a blocked-punt touchdown. Those little things that, when you’re inexperienced, and a lot of our team was inexperienced, even though a lot of seniors were inexperienced because of all the good Pleasant Valley classes that came before them.

“When you’re inexperienced and you’re struggling to find wins, those mistakes become mountains.”

Stroudsburg’s Benny Pembleton was responsible for the game’s first three touchdowns. He ran the ball 15 yards into the endzone for the first score, then returned a Doug Haines punt 44 yards to put the Mountaineers up 13-0.

Quarterback Sherwin Stewart fired a bullet to Pembleton early in the second quarter to pull away to a 20-0 lead. Stroudsburg scored 27 second quarter points to put the mercy rule into effect at halftime.

Pleasant Valley running back Nasai Moon left the game in the second quarter for concussion protocol as Stroudsburg was able to stop the senior running back, coming off a 263-yard game against East Stroudsburg South last week.

Kosciolek switched up his offense after the injury, and will have time in the off-season to spend with his players to get ready for next year.

“There were growing pains for sure,” Kosciolek said about his first season. “First year, we’re trying to do some new things, still trying to get to know some of these kids. The biggest takeaway for us was growth. We did some things early in the season that were fundamental things that weren’t correct that we’ve corrected throughout the season. So there was a good amount of growth in terms of what we want to do X-and-O wise and schematically.”

Stroudsburg finished its season fifth in the District 11 6A standings and will wait for its first-round playoff matchup next weekend.

ONE WIN

... Kosciolek grabbed a lone victory in his first head coaching season. The 21-18 win came against a winless East Stroudsburg North team in Week 7.

EVERYTHING COMING TOGETHER

... Kosciolek talked about having success in every phase of the game to complete the package. “We just have to be able to put the whole package together: offense, defense and special teams. We got to be able to find a way to stay healthy. We got banged up a couple of times here and there and didn’t have a lot of depth, so that hurt us. We’ve got a lot of kids that are going to be coming up, moving up the ladder in terms of class. The future’s bright so I’m looking forward to having a full offseason with this team and just implementing from ground zero with a complete off-season,” he said.
