Offense powers Trinity past winless Colts

SHIRMENSTOWN – Marian just couldn’t figure out undefeated Trinity Friday night.

To be sure, the Colts found out early and often just how good the Shamrocks were – better known as “the Rock” with their fans – long before the first quarter had come to an end.

Riding the back of an offense that produced 509 yards combined passing and rushing, and a swarming defense, the Rock rolled to their third straight win of the season, 48-0.

The quick-hitting Shamrocks took off from the get-go, scoring on all three of their first quarter possessions to start the avalanche. Quarterback Danny Scott was near perfect in the opening quarter, passing eight times, missing but twice in directing the team to a 20-0 first quarter lead.

Scott rifled three quick completions in the first drive, racked up 39 yards rushing with his quick and elusive feet, and packed in the first touchdown on a 1-yard plunge. He then flipped a pass to Connor Mccarthy for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

The score went to 14-0 on the second possession of the evening. Scott went airborne to start a 4-play, 54-yard scoring drive, hitting Mccarthy with a 24-yard completion, and found senior wide receiver D’amonte Porter in the middle of the Marian secondary for 14 yards, before racing 15 yards to the 1-yard line. Scott finished the drive with another 1-yard plunge.

Meanwhile, Marian couldn’t muster an offense on its first two possessions, and then fell behind after a Lucca Stroia 44-yard punt put the Trinity back at its own 39. But in a flash, the Rock motored toward the end zone for a third score, the drive highlighted by a 49-yard pass completion to all-purpose running back Daniel Kosinski at the one before Tyler Rossi slammed into the end zone.

The Colts finally found some footing when quarterback Mason Miller connected with back-to-back completions – the first an 11-yarder to Luis Teron, the second a 14-ard zip to Dakota Streisel. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to put the Colts over the top with the drive stalling deep in Trinity territory.

The Shamrocks started their second quarter with another scoring drive, which featured a 46-yard touchdown dash by Rossi. On their second possession of the quarter were back in the end zone, this time on a thrilling punt return of 49 yards by Porter set the stage for a three-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Ryan Berringer for a 34-0 halftime lead.

And the Shamrocks kicked in the running clock on their first possession of the second half when they marched 70 yards in 11 plays with Trey Mcauliffe snagging a 17-yard touchdown heave from Scott. Reserve Max Schlager found the end zone as well when he dashed 67 yards to the house, and Will Thropp added the kick to set the final count.

NOT SO FAST

… The Shamrocks love running the hurry up offense. They also love to keep things rolling along while having the game “iced,” too.

DAKOTA SHINES

… Streisel came on in relief of starting QB Mason Miller and did a superb job. He has a quick release and was very accurate. Miller suffered a game-ending injury in the second quarter.

WATCH OUT

… Two rising Marian freshmen, Xavier Ocasio and Luis Teron, both have a lot of potential and will get more than a few reps moving forward.

GOODFELLAS

… Marian fans travel well. They brought a solid crowd for such a long trip. And it just wasn’t parents, but the goodfella fans that stay with the team thick and thin.
