Nesquehoning VFW Auxiliary meeting held

The regular monthly meeting of the VFW Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial Post 8008 was held April 20 at the post home with President Christa Kattner presiding.

General Orders 9 were read and filed for action.

The annual JROTC awards ceremony will be held on May 23 at Panther Valley High School; the auxiliary approved two awards.

Also received were communication regarding the Pennsylvania Outdoor Veterans and the Community Safety Day, which will be held on May 5 in Jim Thorpe.

A thank you was received from the American Cancer Society, and communication regarding Boscov’s “Friends Helping Friends” was also read.

Since the last meeting, 110 cards and five books of stamps were sent.

Members present reported 18 hours in funerals and 21 hours for the Hometown Heroes project. Buddy Poppy Days at Redner’s will be May 4-6; support the area’s disabled veterans by displaying a Buddy Poppy. The 2018 Buddy Poppy King and Queen are Hayden Matula and Josephine Simchak; members of the court are Jessie Ellis, Jovie Breiner and Sofia Simchak.

Primary elections will be in May and all registered voters are encouraged to vote.

Donations were made to the Department Jack Barger Nursing Scholarship, the Department President’s “Love Gift,” UVO Easter Egg Hunt of March 24 and the Community Safety Day.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the meeting day was changed to the second Friday of the month at 6:30 p.m. for the upcoming year.

Delegates for the District Convention, which will be hosted by Nesquehoning on May 20, are: Maureen Hirochek, Cheri Santore, Tony DeMarco, Mary Arieta and Mary Ann Feinsilber. Alternates are: Missy Hascher, Corinne Kattner, Earl Keller, Lewis Hirochek Sr. and Linda Paul.

Delegates for the Department Convention, June 13-16 in Gettysburg are: Mary Arieta, Maureen Hirochek and Missy Hascher. Alternates are: Cheri Santore, Linda Paul and Lewis Hirochek Sr.

The National Convention will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, from July 21-25; Delegates are: Christa Kattner and Maureen Hirochek. Alternates are Missy Hascher and Mary Arieta.

Nomination and election of officers for 2018-19 were held, with the following accepting their offices; President Christa Kattner; Sr. Vice President Tony DeMarco; Jr. Vice President Cheri Santore; Treasurer Mary Arieta; Chaplain Linda Paul; Conductor Lewis Hirochek Sr.; Guard Earl Keller; three-year Trustee Maureen Hirochek; two-year Trustee Tony DeMarco and one-year Trustee Mary Ann Feinsilber. Appointed officers are Secretary Cheri Santore; Patriotic Instructor Corinne Kattner; Historian Maureen Hirochek; Flag Bearers (4) Cheri Santore, Christa Kattner, Missy Hascher and Tony DeMarco; Banner Bearer Mary Ann Feinsilber and Musician Tillie Lakata. Cheri Santore will be the installing officer. Joint installation of officers will be held on May 25.

The next regular meeting will be May 18 at 6:30 p.m.
