Carbon County looks to change gun permit process

The Carbon County Sheriff’s office is hoping to simplify applying for gun permits because of lags in the online state system.

On Thursday, Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein asked Sheriff Dan Zeigler about the process because the county had been receiving complaints on the wait time for the process to be completed.

Zeigler said that usually in the afternoon the program the county utilizes through the state lags, creating delays.

To solve this, Zeigler said he is hoping to move the system online instead of people needing to come to the courthouse to apply. The system would be that people could apply for the permit online and then the county would approve it.

Once approved, the applicant would be contacted to pick up their permit.

This would cut down on applicants’ time sitting in the hallway, which has increased to hours instead of minutes because of the lag in the state system.

“I think this option that we didn’t have available to us before is a really good solution to correct the problem and at no cost to the county,” Zeigler said.

He hopes the contract will get approved to allow him to implement this in the near future.
