Pleasant Valley approves senior property tax rebates

The Pleasant Valley School Board approved the Older Adults Property Tax Rebate Resolution of 2022 at their meeting on Thursday night.

Eligible residents with a household income of up to $8,000 per year can receive a $650 in tax rebate on their property taxes. The amount of the rebate decreases as the income increases.

For older adults with an income of between $8,001 and $15,000 per year, the rebate is $500. For those with an income between $15,001 and $18,000, the rebate is $350. And for those with an income between $18,001 and $35,000, the rebate is $250.

In order to be eligible, a person must be:

• 65 years old as of Dec. 31, 2022;

• Lived with a spouse who was 65 years old or older as of Dec. 31, 2022;

• Be a widow or widower during all or part of 2022 and be 50 years old or older as of Dec. 31, 2022, or;

• Be permanently disabled and 18 years old or older during all or part of 2022, and unable to work because of the medical determined physical or mental disability that will continue indefinitely.

People who receive Supplemental Security Income payments are still eligible for the rebate if they meet the other requirements.

Income is considered to include but not limited to salaries, wages, income from self-employment, alimony, cash public assistance and relief, 50% of Social Security benefits, the gross amount of any pensions or annuities, unemployment benefits, veterans disability payments, rentals, and workmen’s compensation. Income does not include Medicare and Railroad Retirement benefits.
