Nesquehoning Borough Council voted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting last week.

• Council spoke about a franchise agreement with Blue Ridge Communications that expired last month. Solicitor Robert Yurchak said that the company requested a 10-year term, but council asked for a quote on a five-year term.

Councilwoman Mary Fox asked what all this agreement entails because residents have questioned it in recent months.

Yurchak said that it provides cable service to the borough and the borough gets a percentage back from the agreement, but it does not prevent another cable company from coming in to provide service options. It just prevents another company from using the existing lines that are already installed by Blue Ridge, meaning a new company would have to run its own lines.

• The next borough recreation commission meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the recreation center on West Railroad Street.

• Approved three-year contracts pending Yurchak’s review with S&O Computers LLC for managed services in the borough office and police department.

• The borough’s Christmas tree lighting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Lions Club tree, located in the park across the street from Turkey Hill on West Catawissa Street. Meeds United Memorial Church then invites everyone back to the church, located a few doors down the street, for caroling and cookies.

• Council addressed concerns several residents have posted on a Nesquehoning Facebook group, that is not associated with the borough, regarding streetlights.

Council said that the borough is not randomly turning off streetlights. The board, several years ago, changed and removed some street lighting to save money, but has not done anything with lighting since then.

If a streetlight is on a pole and is out, residents are asked to either call the borough office with the number on that pole or call PPL.
