A quick response by the West Penn fire company stopped what could have been an explosive situation. Just after 3 p.m. an officer of the Mahanoy City fire department radioed into the Schuylkill County communication center about a working pickup truck fire along Route 309 atop the Blue Mountain in West Penn Township.

Fire companies from West Penn, New Ringgold, Walker township and New Tripoli were dispatched to the scene. When firefighters arrived on scene they found the pickup fully involved in flames.

Officials were immediately informed the truck was pulling a trailer filled with fireworks. Fire crews managed to keep the fire contained to the pickup. Area fire police maintained traffic control at the scene shutting down the roadway. West Penn township police are investigating the incident.
