Zion UCC to present in-person ecumenical cantata
The music department of Zion UCC, Second and Iron streets, Lehighton, has announced the return of its ecumenical Christmas Cantata.
The in-person cantata, titled “On This Very Night,” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 inside Zion UCC’s sanctuary.
Created by Karla Worley, the cantata tells the story of the birth of Jesus through song and readings.
In addition to the cantata, the choir will also perform “Almost There” an anthem that is perfect for the first Sunday of Advent.
Although COVID-19 has reduced the number of participants, the singers who have been attending practices have proved that quality is as important as quantity.
About 50 singers are expected to participate, representing over a dozen local churches and groups.
The songs are an enjoyable mix of contemporary and traditional selections, and the cantata will wrap up with a rousing collection of carols that will have the congregation joining in the singing.
Soloists for the cantata include Dave Riegel and Casi Reichard in “Who Would Imagine a King”; Amy Shelly in a rousing version of “Go Tell!”; and April Walker in “Christmastime.” Also performing in “Christmastime” is an ensemble including Kathy Long, Lisa Hiles, Lizzie Rief, Susan Moyer and Sarah Dalton.
The cantata will be accompanied by the 20-piece Zion Festival Orchestra, which will also offer several pieces of Christmas music for the evening including a beautiful arrangement of “Silent Night,” “Christmas Music from the Movies” and several more.
Narration will be by Lehighton’s storyteller, Kathy Long. Laura Reichard, who serves as the rehearsal pianist, will also join the Festival Orchestra for the cantata and will also offer solo pieces, as well as perform on Zion’s grand Austin Organ.
The cantata is free to the public, but a freewill offering will be accepted for Zion’s general fund, allowing them to continue their programs.
Zion’s Music Department is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley, who will serve as director for the cantata and orchestra.
