Palmerton Borough Council

Palmerton Borough Council took the following action last week:

• Approved the resignation of part-time patrolman Derek Solt, who took a full-time position with the Lehighton Borough Police Department.

• Asked the Carbon County Commissioners to reject the initial bids for the Mauch Chunk Road project, and to combine the 2019 and 2020 Community Development Block Grant funds to repave the south side of Mauch Chunk Road.

• The borough is seeking a replacement to fill a vacant seat on the borough’s water authority due to the recent death of William Smelas.

• Allowed PPL to convert 178 streetlights to LED at no cost to the borough, which is expected to result in a savings of about $60 to $70 per month.

• Approved several use requests for the Palmerton bandstand, with the rose garden serving as the alternate to the bandstand while it’s under construction.

• Extended the deadline for Berkheimer Associates to collect the Earned Income Tax until May 17.

• The voting location for residents who live in the middle and west districts of the borough has changed. Last year, voting took place at the Palmerton Municipal Fire Company at Fifth Street and Lehigh Avenue. This year these two districts will vote at the Palmerton Borough Garage, located at 402 Third St. Residents in the east district will continue voting at the Palmerton Ambulance. primary election day is May 18.

• An Electronics Recycling Event will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 20 in the borough garage. Residents can bring their electronics to the garage and remain in their car while the recycling company employees remove the items from their cars. Any items requiring a fee can be paid with cash or check made out to RRS.
