Large brush fire at the Gorge

Multiple fire companies continue to fight a major brush fire that broke out at the Lehigh Gorge State Park Wednesday afternoon.

Vince Yaich, Jim Thorpe Fire Company chief, said the department got the fire call around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The original call was for a fire around mile marker 108, but that they found it at mile marker 113, so they turned the charge over to Lehigh & Lausanne Rural Volunteer Fire Company.

“It was really going,” Yaich said. “It was already up the mountain too far.”

Yaich said they worked the fire until around 9 p.m. Wednesday. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources brought other crews in to work with the bulldozer and did burnout operations as the weather would allow throughout the night.

This morning, Yaich’s crew and others, including Germansville and Lehigh County Task Force took over line improvement and any other burnout and putting hand line and controlling the fire.

“That’s probably going to continue throughout the day,” Yaich said, adding that they could still see active smoke and fire which is probably due to some of the burnout operations.

Yaich said he believes about 65 to 70 percent had been contained as of this morning. He had heard Wednesday night that the fire spread over 250 acres, but that the actual figure won’t be known until DCNR determines the total acreage.

DCNR will determine the cause, though Yaich said it appears to be accidental.

No known injuries were reported.

Called to the scene were volunteers from Jim Thorpe, Franklin Township, Mahoning, Penn Forest, Summit Hill, Nesquehoning and Weatherly.
