Final feasibility study meeting for community center set

The final in a series of feasibility study meetings for the Northern Lehigh Community Center has been scheduled.

Resident Don Eckhart, a member of the Northern Lehigh Recreation board of directors, brought the topic up at last week’s Walnutport Borough Council meeting.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Northern Lehigh School District Administration Building.

Architect Kimmel Bogrette will share her report. State Rep. Zach Mako, Sen. Pat Browne, as well as Lehigh and Northampton County representatives, will also be on hand.

Resident Ricky Smith said he’s an advocate for the center.

“I support what a community center could possibly be,” said Smith, adding that he believes the three communities could gain a lot from it.

Mike Kukitz, executive director of the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority, explained the significance of the meeting.

“At this point in time, it’s more about some of the leaders agreeing to hear the report and discuss it and decide what they want to offer for the community as far as educational and recreational opportunities across the area there,” Kukitz said. “It’s time to have some serious discussions whether we want to make this happen or not.”

Kukitz said representatives from Slatington, Walnutport and Washington Township that make up the board of directors will look into the report.

Located at 545 W. Church St. in Slatington, the 16,000-square-foot community center has been in the works for about 20 years.

Kukitz said that to date, more than $600,000 has been put into getting the building where it’s at.

“It’s a great asset sitting there,” he said. “We just need to figure out how to get it up and running.”
