Bowmanstown fire company holds fundraiser

The Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Company will give folks a chance to win $12,500 this year.

The company will be selling lottery calendars as a fundraiser. The cost per calendar is $25 and they are available for purchase at the station on Lime Street.“The winning numbers will be based on the Pennsylvania daily numbers,” said Chief Michael Spairana.“We have 12 businesses sponsoring the calender. If it’s successful, it’ll raise a lot of money for us. Our funds are depleting and we are trying to do something about it,” he said.“Hopefully this will be a good venture for us.”Residents can get involved in raising money by purchasing a stack of calendars to sell to family and friends who may not live in the borough.Following public comment, the board voted on a new zoning board member. Chad Everette was named to the position Tuesday night. According to Council President Kara Scott, the zoning board was short a member at the last hearing. The board voted to issue a letter to Bowmanstown business Plastic World Recycling Inc. about cleaning up the premises.Mayor William Ravert said, “We talked to Mr. Duane Schleicher, and they were told to have it cleaned up by the 13th. Right now they are doing a pretty good job over there. It looks better, but we need to vote on it just in case.”Councilman Rob Moyer asked the mayor if there has been communication with Schleicher about the cleanup. Ravert said yes.“Residents are really upset, it’s the view of our town. It’s been going on for years and I’ve been hearing about it since I’ve been on the council,” said Scott. “It’s time we do something.”“It’s the property owner who needs to be cited,” said borough solicitor James Preston.Plastic World Recycling Inc. is located on Lehigh Street just off the ramp of Bank Street at the entrance of the borough.“We are trying to get it cleaned up but it has been a challenge for us from the beginning. We’ve sent them letters and may have to continue on with further actions,” Scott said. The council president did acknowledge the business has made an effort to start the cleanup, but residents are still frustrated.
