Brooklyn man pleads guilty to corruption of a minor

A Brooklyn, New York man, who also had a Palmerton address, pleaded in Carbon County court on Friday to one count of corruption of a minor, admitting having inappropriate contact with a young girl.

Gabriel E. Roldan, 30, was arrested by Palmerton police for an incident on July 18, 2014, in the 900 block of Mauch Chunk Street.A then 13-year-old girl said that she was in an apartment when she woke up and found Roldan touching her inappropriately in her private area.Roldan, who has been in prison since his arrest last July, must undergo an evaluation by the state sexual offenders assessment board to determine if he is a violent sexual predator. The charge falls under the provisions of Megan's Law.President Judge Roger N. Nanovic told Roldan he faces a mandatory 15-year registration period as a sexual offender. If it is determined he is a violent sexual predator, that would mean a lifetime registration period. In a plea bargain with the district attorney's office, two counts of aggravated sexual assault and indecent assault were dropped. Also, the agreement calls for a term of one to two years in prison, less a day, in the county prison. However, Nanovic said he would not go along with the plea agreement in which a county term is imposed. He said he would impose a one- to two-year term, but it would be served in a state prison. After consultation with his attorney, Adam Weaver, Roldan said he would go on with the plea.It was noted that Roldan already has over a year in jail on the charge, but Nanovic said, his release on parole would be up to state officials once he is sentenced.Sentencing was deferred so Roldan could get the required evaluation by the sexual assessment board.
