Concert Under the Stars series begins in Lehighton

The Lehighton Band will present its first Concert Under the Stars of the 2015 summer season at 8 p.m. Thursday.

The free concert will be held in the Lehighton Park Amphitheater. Special guests for the program will be the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band.The concert will open with several selections by the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band under thedirection of Jackie DePue. This section will befollowed by numbers by the Lehighton Band, directed by Paul R. Smith. Selections for this part will include "A Bridge Too Far" by John Addison and arranged by JohnnyVinson. LeRoy Anderson's "The Girl I Left Behind Me" from "The Irish Suite" will follow.Three young people from the saxophone section will play "Saxes Will Rock" by Larry Neeck. The soloists will be Mikayla Blakeslee, Ty Sharrow and Brandon Cressley. Mikayla and Brandon are recent graduates from Lehighton High School while Ty will be entering his junior year at Lehighton.The band will play "Italian Festival" arranged by Glenn Osser. This selection will include several tunes from popular movies. For their last selection, the band will play music from Disney's, "Beauty And The Beast."For the last portion of the concert, both bands will join together in presenting several selections. Under the direction of DePue, the bands will play "El Camino" by Jerry Nowak and "Sabre" Dance (from Gayane) by Aram Khatchaturian and arranged by Andrew Balent.Smith will then conduct the bands in "Skyline Overture" by John J. Morrissey followed by "Baby Elephant Walk" by Henry Mancini and arranged by John Moss. Concluding the concert will be a march only to be heard in Lehighton.The "Lehighton Boys Band March" was written by a former director of both the Lehighton Band and the Lehighton Boys Band, Charles E. Fronheiser. This march, believed to be written in the late 1950s, was found this past winter, however the only part found was a condensed score.Paul R. Smith took this and arranged the music for full band. This march will be played in memory of Fronheiser, who touched the lives of many young men during his tenure as director of the Boys Band.The music for this concert is sponsored by the donations of many businesses, professional people and music lovers in the Lehighton area.There will be no rain date for this concert.
