Northern Carbon County has five contested races

There are five contested primary election races to be decided in Northern Carbon County on May 19.

They include two races on each ballot (Democratic and Republican) for nominations for two different terms of seats on the Weatherly Area School District Board of Education and one contest for a Republican nomination for Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors.Weatherly school boardThere are six seats to be filled this year on the Weatherly School Board, five for four-year terms and one for a two-year term.For the four-year terms, seven candidates have cross-filed petitions to have their names appear on each side of the ballot: Bonita Lee Barbush, Gerard Grega, Corey Gerhard, Matthew D. vonFrisch, Chad M. Obert, William Knepper and Georgeann Herling.Four of those candidates are aspiring to win nominations for the two-year term. They are Obert, Barbush, Grega and vonFrisch.The district includes the election districts of Banks, Lehigh, Lausanne and Packer townships; East Side and Weatherly boroughs; and the North District of Kidder Township.Lehigh TownshipThe race in Lehigh Township has Michelle Clark and Larry D. Skinner running for the GOP nomination for the six-year term on the board of supervisors. There is no Democratic candidate.The township voters are also scheduled to elect a person to fill the six-year term as constable, although there are no candidates for the post.Banks TownshipFour Democrats are running unopposed for positions in Banks Township.They include Richard Porpiglia and Charles J. Schalles, who are seeking a six-year term and two-year term, respectively, on the board of supervisors.The other two candidates are David Bodnar Jr., who is seeking a six-year term as an auditor in the township, and Bruce Knepper, who is running for the six-year term as constable.Lausanne TownshipThere are no candidates appearing on the municipal ballot in Lausanne Township this year.Township voters are slated to elect four people to various positions, including one supervisor for a six-year term, one auditor for six years and another for four years, and constable for a six-year term.Packer TownshipNo contests exist this time around in Packer Township, where there will be only two people listed on the ballot.They are Republicans William E. Swinesburg, who is seeking re-election to a six-year term on the board of supervisors, and George J. Bozar III, who is running for the six-year term of constable.No one is running for the six-year term on the board of auditors that is slated to be filled by the voters.Beaver Meadows BoroughVoters in Beaver Meadows will not have contested races from which to choose as a shortage of candidates exists for the primary.Four people are expected to be elected this year to four-year terms on the borough council. There are only three candidates: Democrats Alfred J. Mitcho Jr. and Anthony A. Rusnock and Republican Kevin F. Hines.The borough voters are also slated to elect one person to a two-year term on the council, two auditors, for six years and two years, respectively, and one person to serve as constable for six years. There are no candidates on either ballot for any of those positions.Weatherly BoroughWeatherly Borough voters will not see any contested races on their municipal ballot this year.They are expected to elect a mayor to a four-year term and two council members for four-year terms.Only Republican Norman B. Richie is seeking the mayor's post while there are two council candidates, Democrat Joseph M. Cyburt and Republican George E. Miller Jr.A six-year term as constable is also to be filled by the electorate, but there are no candidates on either ballot for the position.East Side BoroughFour council candidates are unopposed on the Democratic ballot in East Side Borough. There are no Republican candidates.Seeking the four-year terms are Rudolph C. Schoch, John P. Marotta, Helen Stockinger and Francis A. Becker.No one is running on either ticket for the six-year term as constable.District JusticeIncumbent Magisterial District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. is running for re-election to another six-year term. He has cross-filed petitions to have his name appear on both ballots and is without opposition.Magisterial District 56-3-04 encompasses Beaver Meadows, East Side and Weatherly boroughs and Banks, Kidder, Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships.HASD ballotingVoters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows will also participate in the Hazleton Area School District Board of Education balloting, where there are six people seeking five nominations on both ballots.The six candidates are cross-filed. They are Carmella Yenkevich, Tony Bonomo, Robert Fiume, Vinnie Zola, Marie Kay and Jackie Scarcella.
