Not guilty pleas entered in Coaldale killing

Two men accused of beating to death a Coaldale man have waived their formal arraignments and entered pleas of not guilty in Schuylkill County court.

Oliver L. Trizarri, 21, of Reading, and Stanley E. Kralik, 17, of Coaldale, are charged in the death of Corey M. Samuels, 24, sometime after 11 p.m. Jan. 20, 2014.At a preliminary hearing on March 10 Trizarri admitted to his role in Samuels' death.Trizarri is represented by public defender Michael O'Pake; Kralik is represented by public defender Claude A. Lord Shields. Both men are in the county jail without bail. Both are charged with first and third degree murder, criminal homicide, robbery/inflicting serious bodily injury, aggravated assault, theft, and conspiracy.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Frackville state Trooper Melissa Kyper, here's how the investigation unfolded:On Jan. 23, 2014, Kristin Sawicki reported to Coaldale police that Samuels, her brother, was missing. Police learned he was last seen with Trizarri and Kralik in a wooded area of the borough.A search failed to find Samuels. Trizarri told Coaldale police that he, Kralik and Samuels decided to go for a walk in the woods on the night of Jan. 20, 2014, and that they had argued with Samuels, who had walked away from them. Kralik told police the same story.Police learned that no one had seen Samuels since that night.Police turned the investigation over to state police on April 29.Kyper obtained Samuels' bank and cell phone records; neither showed any activity since Samuels had gone missing. On Sept. 6, human remains were discovered in the wooded area off East Miner Street in Coaldale, near an old railroad bed frequented by hikers, walkers, and all terrain vehicle riders. In addition to bones, Kyper saw dark pants, a black glove with a skeleton design, boxer shorts, and two black Timberland boots.Samuels' sister and his girlfriend identified the gloves and boots as his. A further search turned up Samuels' glasses and knife and more articles of clothing.A forensic examination revealed sharp and blunt force trauma to the skull and a stab wound to the eye area. Samuels' death was ruled a homicide. On Jan. 11, 2015, Kyper and Trooper Michael Marinchak interviewed Trizarri at the Reading barracks. He told them that about three weeks before Samuels went missing, Kralik told him that a female friend accused Samuels of sexually assaulting her. He said Kralik told him he "wanted to kill Samuels."Trizarri said he would help and the two plotted to lure Samuels into the woods, where Trizarri would hit him with a shovel, then Kralik would hold him on the ground while they killed him.Trizarri said that Samuels came to Kralik's house in Coaldale on Jan. 20, 2014, with his girlfriend, Tara Kurtz. After Kralik told Kurtz that it was to be a "guys' night," and walking her home, the three walked to the woods to drink and smoke.Trizarri brought a shovel, but it was Kralik, he told police, who used it to hit Samuels in the head. Trizarri said he pinned Samuels to the ground, trying to suffocate him, and choked him.Once Samuels was unconscious, he hit him in the head several times with the shovel and kicked him in the groin. Then Trizarri and Kralik took Samuels' wallet, a rosary, and his cell phone. They dragged Samuels' body about 20 feet off the trail and covered it with snow, and covered the blood on the trail with snow. They walked back to Kralik's house, where they burned the wallet in the basement and put the shovel in a corner. Kralik discarded the cell phone, but kept a cross pendant from the rosary "as a momento."Trizarri said Kralik said he would show the pendant to the female who had accused Samuels' of assault, and the two agreed to lie to police if confronted about Samuels' disappearance. That same day Trizarri was taken to Coaldale, where he identified where he and Kralik had killed Samuels.Kralik was interviewed at the Frackville barracks that same day.He told troopers he and Trizarri fought with Samuels, and that he had punched Samuels in the head and that Trizarri had hit him in the head several times with the shovel.
