Man is charged in assault shortly after leaving prison

Charges against a man accused of assaulting his girlfriend after she picked him up from prison have been bound over to Monroe County Court.

Jim Akers, 22, of Stroudsburg, was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing March 27 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso.Instead, Akers waived his right to the hearing.Akers faces charges on three counts of recklessly endangering another person, as well as one count each of aggravated assault, robbery, simple assault, terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, endangering welfare of children, disorderly conduct and harassment.He has been returned to the Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 monetary bail.According to the affidavit filed by trooper Justin Magluilo of the Lehighton state police barracks:The incident occurred at 2 p.m. Feb. 9 as the victim and witness agreed to pick up the victim's boyfriend, Akers, when he was released from the Monroe County Correctional Facility.After picking up Akers from jail, he and the victim engaged in a verbal argument as Akers accused the victim of cheating on him.During this time, the witness was operating his 1989 Chevrolet pickup, the victim was the front middle seat passenger, Akers was the right front passenger, and the victim's 11-year-old son was in the back seat.As the argument ensued, the vehicle stopped at the gas station on Route 115 and Gilbert Road. Akers forced the victim out of the vehicle and began slamming her face against a car that was parked next to theirs.The witness pulled Akers away from the victim as they all got back into the vehicle.While in the vehicle, Akers continued to strike the victim in the face with a closed fist numerous times. The victim's head became stuck between the seat, and her son was screaming next to her.Akers ordered the witness to go to the Uni-Mart on Route 115 in Effort. During this time, Akers told the victim he would kill her as he continued to punch her in the face and began choking her.They left the Uni-Mart and Akers was dropped off at the corner of Burger Hollow Road and Serfass Road in Polk Township.While he exited the vehicle, Akers stole the victim's phone. The witness drove the victim to a nearby crash scene and reported the incident to Magluilo.As the result of the altercation, the victim sustained injuries including a broken eye socket.
