Rush Township will purchase police car

A 2014 Ford Interceptor sedan all-wheel-drive will become the newest police vehicle in Rush Township.

At Thurday's board of supervisors meeting held at the municipal building, 108 Lafayette Ave., the board unanimously agreed to purchase the $32,438 car from KME with financing for three years with the first payment being in January 2016.Resident Charles Shamonsky asked for clarification about the source of funding for the purchase. The board also authorized Chairman Shawn E. Gilbert to execute a temporary easement and permanent easements for properties involved in the Lincoln Dive Sewer Project. The board also approved, retroactively, a motion for the Rush Township fire police to assist with a veterans parade in Nesquehoning.Chris Huegel of Hometown Fire Company asked the board about procedures involved for the fire company to request permission to take part in activities and fundraisers that might pop up unexpectedly."Just so we don't lose out at the fire company," Huegel said, citing a recent Ryan Township dirt bike run opportunity for the fire company.Vice Chairman Robert J. Leibensperger explained that a "carte blanche" approach can't be done for such approvals but the board would be sensitive to requests."We can be contacted on a moment's notice," explained Leibensperger. If all else fails, the board can approve the activity retroactively, added Gilbert. The board announced that ash pick up will take place Wednesday due to Thanksgiving. The township building will be closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving and Nov. 28 for the holiday. It was announced that properties are currently being posted for water shut-off due to nonpayment of sewer bills.Township residents are encouraged to sign up for Code Red on the township website, a safety initiative.Letters were read from Elizabeth Brobst, thanking the township for a grant received for a home program, and from Susan Strauss, who commended township police for "outstanding performance" at an Oct. 2 incident at her home.
