One killed, two injured in Hometown crash

A Hazleton-area man was killed and two others injured in a two-car collision Wednesday afternoon in Hometown.

According to Sgt. Duane Frederick, Rush Township police, Andrew W. Woytko, 83, of Hazle Township, was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus and pulling out from the parking lot at Basile's Italian Restaurant, Claremont Avenue, Route 309, shortly after 3 p.m. when his car was struck by a southbound 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Rosanne Levitt, 29, of Lansford.Woytko died at 3:19 p.m. due to injuries sustained in the collision, said police.Levitt was traveling southbound and struck the Woytko vehicle in the southbound lanes of travel, according to police.After colliding, both vehicles ended up in the northbound lanes facing south near the intersection of Lincoln Drive, Route 1021.Levitt was taken to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale, for treatment of injuries. Her condition is unknown.An unidentified female passenger in the Woytko vehicle was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton.Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.An investigation by Cpl. Adam Sinton is underway.The area has been the scene of numerous crashes."It's time to restrict the turns at that intersection before anyone else dies. There have been too many accidents there," said Kelly Boran Smith on Times News Facebook updates on the crash."So sad. Too many accidents lately," said Mary Sirsky Herman.Traffic along Route 309 was backed up in both directions during extrication of the victims and for a follow-up reconstruction investigation.Responding were Tamaqua Community Ambulance, Lehighton Ambulance, Ryan Township Ambulance, Hometown Fire Company, Tamaqua Rescue Squad, Quakake Volunteer Fire Company and Hometown Fire Police.The vehicles were removed by Hope's Collision and Towing of Tamaqua.
