Hoping for a place to skate

A few months ago, the Summit Hill Recreation Commission almost disbanded.

The group canceled the annual Memorial Day weekend Stay-at-Home celebration. It was a struggle to get people to attend meetings. The group has been revitalized and is again active, said commission President Jodi McAndrew. She attended a meeting of Summit Hill Borough Council Monday night and presented an outline of some of the group's projects. One of the things being considered, she said, is the construction of a skateboard park. She said potential sites are next to the basketball courts (across the street from the municipal building) along West Amidon Street, or in a corner of the Ginder Field. She stressed that no formal plans have been drawn up for such a project and making it a reality could depend on whether grant money can be found.Meanwhile, she said, commission members have a list of other communities that have skateboard parks and plan to visit them for ideas as part of the planning process.McAndrew told the council, "Kids have been coming to rec commission meetings. They are willing to volunteer."We're looking at cost figures and grants," she added.Kira Steber, secretary-treasurer for the borough, said she will consult the borough's insurance carrier to check if the current policy would cover such a project. In other matters related to recreation:• McAndrew said the annual Easter on the Hill event for children of the community will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.• The borough council re-appointed McAndrew to the Recreation Commission. Others appointed to the commission are Melissa Crampsie, Anita McArdle, and Joan Griffith.• McAndrew told the council about plans for a Summit Hill 5K run/walk event on Sunday, May 5. She said a special meeting of the commission will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, at the Summit Hill Community Center to review the plans.• As a fundraiser, the commission will sell breakfast sandwiches and coffee before the Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 26.• The commission's next meeting will be held in the Community Center at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1.

BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS The Summit Hill Recreation Commission said it is hoping to someday construct a skateboard park in the borough, possibly next to the basketball courts across from the borough hall.
