Savoy Brown performs Saturday at opera house

Pack a bag. Buckle up. Hit the gas. British rockers Savoy Brown visit Jim Thorpe's Mauch Chunk Opera House at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Featuring the legendary guitarist Kim Simmonds, they celebrate the release of their brand-new CD, "Goin' To The Delta," and invite you to ride shotgun on their musical road trip. It's the sound of a band with the wind in their sails. Following 2011's acclaimed "Voodoo Moon" and last year's whip-cracking live set, "Songs From The Road," Savoy Brown are in a swagger, and you can hear the momentum on these 12 love letters to American blues.Rewind to 1965, and Simmonds was a linchpin of perhaps the most exciting scene in history, establishing Savoy Brown in the first wave of British blues boomers, opening for Cream's first London show and being name-dropped in the same breath as peers like Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.Through the years, as Savoy Brown band members came and went, and the music scene shifted around him, guitarist Simmonds stuck thrillingly to his guns and reaped the rewards. Performing in iconic venues like Carnegie Hall and the Fillmore East and West, and releasing more than 30 albums, he later enjoyed a well-deserved induction into Hollywood's Rock Walk of Fame.Coming up on 50 years in the making, Simmonds' career is sprawling and eclectic. "Goin' To The Delta" continues to bring that blues-rock passion to the surface, channeling the classic vibe of the U.S. blues masters through his modern worldview, bringing a musical performance that is all pedal to the metal. For tickets or more information visit MauchChunkOperaHouse.com; the opera house, Monday through Friday, from noon until 5 p.m. or call 570-325-0249; or at SoundCheck Records in downtown Jim Thorpe from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. or at 570-325-4009.Tickets will also be available at the door at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
