An 18-foot sugar maple tree was planted in front of the parking lot of the First Presbyterian Church in Summit Hill, Thursday.

The tree was planted to mark the 40th anniversary of the Winnie-the-Pooh Day Care, which is located at the church.About 20 children ages 5 and younger helped plant the tree. Each child had a small shovel and tossed loose dirt into the hole that the tree was placed.The tree was donated by Lisa and David Hiles of Summit Hill. It was purchased from J. C. Hill Farm in New Ringgold.David Hiles was assisted by volunteers Jim Delotto, Ted Bortnik and master gardener John Kupek, whose specialty is trees, with planting the tree. Lisa Hiles also is a master gardener.Kupek spoke to the children about the importance of trees, including how they provide habitat for many species of animals such as birds and squirrels.A front end loader provided by David Hiles lifted the tree into place while the volunteers guided it to its permanent placement.
