Two Summit Hill graduates, Stephen Hajcak of Panther Valley High School and Nicole Collevechio of Marian Catholic High School were the first recipients of the Lee Mantz Memorial Scholarship named in honor and memory of the late Summit Hill Historical Society President Lee Mantz.

Both graduates received the $100 scholarship awards presented by current Society President Harry Miller with members of Mantz's family in attendance prior to Wednesday evening's meeting."We are pleased to present these two graduates with the first pair of Lee Mantz Memorial Scholarships. They are definitely deserving of this honor ", said Miller upon presenting Hajcak and Collevechio their awards. In addition to the monetary prize, both graduates also received copies of Mantz's book about Summit Hill containing hundreds of photographs of the town's history.Collevechio said she will be attending Neumann University in Aston, Delaware County. "It's an honor to receive this award," she said after the presentation. She is planning to study Business Administration. She is the daughter of Robert and Mary Jean Collevechio of Summit Hill.Hajcak will be attending Elizabethtown College near Harrisburg in the fall and is planning a dual major in English and History with the goal of a career in education at a college level. "I'm very honored to be given this award. It was very unexpected," he said after the presentation. Hajcak is the son of Steven and Nicole Hajcak of Summit Hill.The Lee Mantz Memorial Scholarship was established last year after the tragic loss of Society President Lee Mantz,44, who was killed in a fall at the Lehigh Gorge State Park on August 12, 2012. "Lee was a friend, a historian and an author and we miss his friendship tremendously," said Miller. "His death was great loss to all of us and we established this scholarship jointly with the Mantz family as a special memorial to him."Two memorial scholarships in the amount of $100 will be given each year, one to a Marian Catholic senior and one to a Panther Valley senior. The students must be in good standing with their schools and demonstrates an avid interest in history with a special interest in local history. They must be a resident of Summit Hill.The winners are determined by the history departments in their respective schools. Special consideration is given to any student with an interest in astronomy as a hobby.
