A late winter storm plastered the area with four to six inches of wet snow, and caused widespread traffic troubles. Tieups occurred on most major hills as the slushy snow piled up during the early afternoon after the flakes started to slant in from the east at mid-morning. One fortunate circumstance was that there were few school buses on the road, since most pupils enjoyed holidays as teachers attended in-service programs. Tow trucks were busy getting stuck vehicles out of a variety of predicaments.
